Adding Images to the Product

When creating products in the Product Page 3.0, at any point in the process you can add one or more images to the item. There are two ways to add them:

  • Drag and Drop One or More Images to the Upload Media Area - This is the easy way! Select the images you want to load and drag them then drop them onto the blue Upload Image icon in the Upload Media area. You can drag any number of images this way, and they will all upload at once.

  • Click the Upload Image Icon - If you need to load images in that are already uploaded to the Server, if you want to hunt for them on your device using the Computer option, or if you have images on an external device like a Camera, this would be the method to use.

  • From Server - If you have images already uploaded to the system, you can find them or upload new ones using this option. In this area you can do the following:

    1. Choose the Folder You Want - By default you'll see the main Images folder, but if what you want is in a subfolder, or if you need to create a folder for what you're uploading, you can right-click on a folder to make new folders, or click the +New Folder button and the new folder will be a sub-folder under whichever one is highlighted.

    2. Upload Files - You can upload one or more files in this area, and it supports drag and drop.

    3. Upload from Camera - Same functionality as described below, but accessible here if you need it.

    4. Search - If you're viewing the folder you need, search for image files by keyword here.

    5. Click the Image - If you're looking for a single image, you can click it to add it automatically.

  • From Computer - This option will open a file search window on your device and you can select one or more image files, click Save, and they will be added.

  • From Camera - If you have a Camera or other external device like a tablet or phone connected to your computer, click this option to take pictures using that device. (Please note, to access images already saved on an external connected device, use the From Computer option, which will allow you to browse all connected devices.) You also have the option of Review After Capture, which will force you to preview and approve each captured new image before they are added. You can click the Camera button to capture a new image and it will be added to the queue at the bottom, which can contain any number of images. Click the Upload Images button to load them into the product.

Please Note: Until you click to Save the product, uploaded images won't be permanently saved.

Adding a Variant Image

If your product has Variants, it needs to be set that way in the upper right before you save it for the first time. Before you can add an image to a variant, you need to create at least one variant name, e.g. Color, Size, Style, and add a variant to it, e.g. Black for color or Camo for style. When you create the variant name, click Save in the Variant area for the option to appear. After you have added a specific variant you'll see the Upload Variant Media area appear below the main upload area.

Unlike the main area, for variants, you can only upload a single image, but you can use any of the options described above to find and load your image.

Best Practices for Your Images

Here are some things to keep in mind when working with product images:

  • Bigger is Better - If you upload tiny images, customers will be less impressed with the item. We recommend a width of at least 800 pixels for every image you upload. The view the customer sees on the website will initially display at about 600 pixels, but when they click to view the image full size, it can be demoralizing if the image opens and is tiny. Also the initial view may be pixelated and grainy if the image is smaller than recommended. For ideal experience, 1200 to 2000 pixels in width is great. If you only have access to small images, consider taking the time to take your own photos with good lighting for the best shopping experience.
  • Follow the Format - There are many image formats, and our system supports all the major ones, but for ideal quality, the best formats are Jpeg (smallest file size), PNG (excellent quality), and WebP (excellent quality). Older file formats such as GIF and TIFF and others will be larger and not as high quality. If you need animation, a GIF image file can do that and will work with this version of the Product page.
  • Don't 'Borrow' Images you Find Online - Many images you can find on the web are copyrighted and rigorously protected via litigation by companies such as Getty Images and other major providers. Other areas of concern are images that other retailers have created and use on their websites. All such images should never be used without permission.
  • Be Original - Images that manufacturers create are literally there for the promotion and sale of those items, so it is almost certain that you are able and even encouraged to use such images. Just remember that some makers do this better than others, so the images might be small or poor quality. Another thing to keep in mind is that many many other retailers are likely to be also using those images. You can set yourself apart from and above the competition by taking pictures yourself, posting unique angles and views, and branding those images with your logo and/or a watermark. If you do so, as mentioned above, be sure to have a well-lighted photo area and make sure your images are properly sized for upload (2,000 pixels wide is ideal, larger sizes might be rejected) and that the file size for the image is less than 4 megabytes.

Here are some image examples from our sample product and how they appear on the website:
