Inventory Management Best Practices

Here are some things you should be doing to keep your inventory in good shape:

  • Are you using the Purchase Order / Receiving Order system? Use it so you have accurate costs, quantities, and profit margins at all times.
  • Add Department to all new products you create, and add Vendor if it's a product you will reorder in the future.
  • Make it a habit to set up products correctly: Always add Default Cost, Reorder Point, and Desired Stock Level for products you plan to order again.
  • Run and then Export your Inventory Value report monthly.
  • Check the Low Inventory report often to see which vendors need items ordered.
  • Check the Inventory Age report to find old inventory you might need to clear out.
  • Check the Inventory Velocity report weekly to see which items are selling well that should be reordered.
  • Check the Ordered Inventory report as needed to prevent duplication of orders.
  • Check Inventory > Products > Filters for items with no Departments, Categories, or Vendors periodically.
