How to Set Up a New Domain in GoDaddy

October 01, 2024October 01, 2024

In this article you will learn how to reserve your domain in GoDaddy. The cost to initially purchase a domain can be as low as $0.99, depending on promotions run by GoDaddy at the time, but there is almost always a reduced cost for the initial year. Typically the cost per year to maintain the registry of your domain for subsequent years is around $22 per year for .com purchases (other extensions can be more or less, depending on the extension). That fee is separate from your website hosting service with us. Your domain name is your online identity and is a company asset that belongs to you: it is your intellectual property and it is always best to maintain control of it.

Reserving a New Domain Name

  1. Go to GoDaddy.com and enter the domain name you want (e.g. mycompany.com) into the large search area on the home page, if it is available it will tell you. If your desired name is taken, GoDaddy will suggest alternatives. You can also try different extensions (like .net, .org, etc.).

  2. Click the Let’s Go button, the site will add it to your cart, then the Continue button.

  3. Select the features you want, if any. You do not need Full Domain Protection unless you’re worried about hackers getting your login and stealing the domain. Another concern can be missing a payment (if this happen and is not corrected, your domain will become public and anyone can reserve it away from you. GoDaddy will be contacting you repeatedly about that). The privacy service prevents you from being directly contacted by anyone but GoDaddy about your domain, and is something they include.

  4. Once you have the options you want, click the Continue to Cart button.

  5. As you’re viewing your cart, there will be a drop-down menu on your domain. This is for yearly renewals. Most clients register for one year at a time, GoDaddy sometimes offers discounts for multiple years. Select the number of years you want to register for.

  1. When you’re satisfied with your selections, click the I’m Ready to Pay button to continue.

  2. Before proceeding, GoDaddy might prompt you to finalize your account information if you haven't already.

  3. Fill out the Billing Information. When you get your Customer ID Number write it down as well as the password and Call-In Pin that you choose. We will need the login information when we deploy the website. After you check out and complete your order, please email your Customer ID number and password to your Account Manager so that we will have that info available when it comes time to take your site live.

  4. Follow the prompts to enter your payment details and complete your purchase.
