Create a Screen Capture Image

Looking for a way to make an image file of what you see on your screen? Here are some easy ways to do screen captures. We'll start with the most simple methods and work our way up to more full featured solutions.

 

Windows Snipping Tool

Every version of Windows since Vista has had this handy utility. To find it, go to your Search at the bottom right of the Windows bar, right next to the Windows icon and enter Snipping Tool.

How to Use It and What It Can Do - The Snipping Tool is a great little utility! After you open it, just click the New button, then drag a box around the area you want in your screen capture image. When you let go, that image area will load into the tool's little editor. In there, you can use the pen to write over the image, use the highlighter tool to, um, highlight stuff, and they have an eraser you can use to remove your mistakes. Click the Disk icon to save your image and you're done!

 

Greenshot

To find it, type Greenshot in the Search bar at the bottom left of the windows bar to download. It’s free and easy to use for beginners.

How to Use It and What It Can Do - Greenshot is a lightweight software that offers various capture options, including the ability to capture a region, a window, or the entire screen. Greenshot also provides basic editing and annotation capabilities.

Once it’s downloaded, you’ll need to change the hotkey associated with Greenshot since the snipping tool uses the print screen key. You can do that by clicking the up arrow on the right-hand side of the windows bar, selecting the greenshot logo, and clicking Preferences.

Once you change the hotkeys, hit whichever keys you entered to capture an image!

 

ShareX

Just like the snipping tool and greenshot, search ShareX in your main system search and download it to start capturing images.

How to Use It and What It Can Do - ShareX is a powerful open-source tool known for its extensive capture options, including full screen, windows, scrolling areas, and more. It also includes advanced features like screen recording, editing, and direct sharing to various platforms.

If you choose this capture software, you’ll need to change the hotkeys as the snipping tool uses the print screen key. Once you've downloaded ShareX, the window will pop up. Navigate to Hotkey settings and enter in your desired hotkeys. Then start capturing!
